Anxiety and Phobias

Unlock your fear....
Feeling anxious?
Feeling anxious is normal, everyone experiences anxiety when they
are faced with a situation that they find threatening or difficult. It puts you on high alert and gives you
the motivation to deal with the situation.
When is feeling anxious not helpful?
Anxiety becomes a problem when it begins to control your life
and start to impact what you can and can't do. Prolonged anxiety can cause mental and
physical symptoms, the effect of which can begin to limit your life in some way or another. If you are unable to do
the things you want due to a state of high or prolonged anxiety then you may have developed a phobia.
A phobia is a fear of a particular situation or some thing that is not
dangerous or life threatening. A phobia will lead you to avoid situations in which you know you
will become anxious. Unfortunately over time, this reaction increases the power of the phobia over you. You may
even find your life becomes dominated by the precautions that you take to avoid the situations
that you fear. Even though you know logically that there is no excessive danger, you are still unable to control
the fear.
What causes anxiety and phobias?
There is some scientific research that suggests some people have a
predisposition to anxiety and that it is inherited through our genes. However, for the majority of people, phobias
are usually caused by the following:
- Highly stressful events, either experienced or witnessed
- Life change
- Learned behaviour
- Effects of non prescriptive drugs - LSD, Ecstasy, Amphetamines etc.
